What the Minor Arcana Actually Is
A standard tarot deck has 78 cards, and 56 of them are the Minor Arcana. If the Major Arcana are life's big chapter titles, these are the everyday scenes: the awkward text, the money worry, the surprise burst of motivation. They split into four suits, and each suit runs from Ace to Ten, plus four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King. Don't skip them. They tend to be where a reading gets specific.
The Four Suits and Their Themes
Wands are linked with fire: passion, ambition, creativity and momentum. Cups go with water: feelings, relationships, intuition and imagination. Swords belong to air: thoughts, communication, truth and the occasional mental tangle. Pentacles (sometimes called Coins) connect to earth: work, resources, the body, home and slow, steady building. These elemental links are a popular tradition, and some decks rename suits or tweak the meanings, so let your own deck's imagery guide you too.
Numbers and Court Cards
Numbers add a storyline across all four suits. Aces often read as seeds or new starts, twos as choices or balance, threes as growth or teamwork, fours as stability or a pause. Fives tend to bring friction, sixes some relief, sevens a test, eights effort and skill, nines near-completion, and tens a full cycle. Court cards are trickier: Pages are curious beginners, Knights are people or energies in motion, Queens are inward mastery, and Kings are outward authority. A court card can describe someone in your life, or a way you are being invited to act.
Connecting Tarot Suits to Your Birth Chart
Because the suits echo the four elements, they pair nicely with astrology. If your chart leans heavily on water placements, Cups may feel like home turf, while a lot of air might make Swords cards feel familiar. This is a lens for reflection, not a verdict, and a single card never locks in an outcome. Pulling one card a day and noticing which suit keeps appearing is a gentle way to spot patterns in your own habits. Vela's take: the Minor Arcana is tarot's mirror for ordinary life, and ordinary life is where most of the good stuff happens. A daily reading that starts from your birth chart can give those everyday cards a little more personal context.
