What the Major Arcana Actually Is

A tarot deck has 78 cards, and the Major Arcana is the 22 heavy hitters, numbered 0 (The Fool) through 21 (The World). The other 56 cards, the Minor Arcana, cover everyday moods and events. The Majors are different: they point to bigger themes, turning points, and lessons that tend to color a whole chapter of life. When several of them land in one spread, it is often a hint that the question runs deeper than it first looked.

The Fool's Journey in Plain English

Many readers see the Major Arcana as a story called the Fool's Journey. The Fool steps off the cliff with a bag and a bright outlook, then meets teachers and tests, like the Magician, the High Priestess, the Empress, and the Emperor. Midway come the humbling cards, such as Death (usually about endings and change, not literal death) and the Tower (sudden shake-ups). Later, the Star, the Moon, and the Sun bring hope, doubt, and clarity, and the World closes the loop with a sense of completion. Think of it as a map of growth, not a fixed schedule you must follow.

How to Read a Major Arcana Card in a Spread

When a Major shows up, slow down and ask what theme it is naming, not just what will happen. The Tower, for example, can mean a surprise that clears out something shaky, and it invites you to think about what is worth rebuilding. Reversed or upside-down cards often suggest the energy is blocked, internal, or still brewing. Notice the card's neighbors too, since a Major beside gentle Minor cards reads differently than one in the middle of a stormy spread. Tarot is a reflection tool, so use it to prompt better questions rather than to predict outcomes.

Where Astrology Meets the Majors

Tarot and astrology have long been cousins. Many traditions link Major Arcana cards to planets and zodiac signs, such as the Sun card with the Sun or the Empress with Venus, though the exact pairings vary by system. That overlap is why your birth chart can add a second layer of meaning to a reading. If a card tied to a planet keeps appearing, you might look at where that planet sits in your chart for extra context. Use the connection as a creative lens, not a rulebook, and keep what resonates with you.
