What decans are (and why they matter)
Each zodiac sign spans 30 degrees, and astrologers split it into three slices of 10 degrees each. Those slices are called decans, from a word meaning ten. Think of a sign as a song with three verses: same melody, slightly different lyrics. It's a big reason two people with the same Sun sign can feel surprisingly unalike.
How the three decans work
In the popular modern system, each decan takes a sub-flavor from a sign of the same element. The first decan (0 to 9 degrees) is pure sign energy. The second (10 to 19 degrees) borrows from the next sign in the same element, and the third (20 to 29 degrees) borrows from the last. For Aries, that means a first decan of Aries, a second with a Leo tint, and a third with a Sagittarius tint. Taurus runs Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, and so on through the wheel. Fair warning: older traditions, like the Chaldean system, assign decan rulers differently, so you may see varying versions. Neither is a rule from the heavens, just a lens.
A quick example with Gemini
A first-decan Gemini tends to lean into classic Gemini traits: curiosity, chatter, and a love of variety. A second-decan Gemini picks up a Libra flavor, which might show up as extra charm and a pull toward partnership and balance. A third-decan Gemini takes on Aquarius notes, which can read as more detached, inventive, and idea-driven. These are tendencies, not verdicts, and your whole chart still gets a vote. Still, if a description of your Sun sign never quite fit, your decan may be the missing piece.
Find your decan in your birth chart
Decans aren't just for your Sun. Every planet and point in your chart sits at a specific degree, so your Moon, Venus, Mars, and Rising each have their own decan. To find yours, look at the degree next to each placement: 0 to 9 is the first decan, 10 to 19 the second, and 20 to 29 the third. Sitting right at the edge of a sign, say 29 degrees or 0 degrees, adds a layer of nuance worth noticing. You need an accurate birth date, time, and place to pin down degrees, especially for your Moon and Rising, which move fast. Once you have them, you'll likely see your sign's flavors in a whole new light.
