What a transit actually is
A transit is simply where a planet is in the sky right now, compared with where planets sat in your birth chart. Your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. The planets never stopped moving after that, and each time one passes over a sensitive spot in your chart, astrologers call it a transit. Think of your birth chart as the stage set and the transiting planets as actors walking across it. The set stays the same; the scene changes.
Fast planets, slow planets
Not all transits weigh the same. The Moon changes signs every couple of days, so its transits are small, mood-sized weather. Mercury, Venus, and Mars move faster than the outer planets, so their effects tend to feel like passing themes. Jupiter and Saturn linger much longer, and Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto take years to cross a single sign, which is why astrologers treat their transits as the long chapters of a life. A slow planet touching your chart is usually about a bigger, more gradual season rather than a single bad Tuesday.
How to read a transit
Look at three things: the transiting planet, the point in your chart it touches, and the aspect between them. A conjunction blends the two energies, an opposition creates tension that asks for balance, and a trine or sextile tends to feel smoother. Then check which house the planet is moving through, because that shows the area of life where the story plays out. Tight contacts, within a few degrees, are generally felt most clearly. A transit describes a theme and an invitation, not a verdict. How you respond is still entirely yours.
Using transits without spiraling
It is easy to see a heavy-sounding planet and brace for the worst, but that is not what astrology is for. Use transits as a way to name what you are already feeling and to plan with a little more awareness. Maybe a Saturn contact asks you to be patient and structured, or a Venus contact nudges you to enjoy your relationships. Keep a short note of what you notice and you will start to see your own patterns over time. Because transits are measured against your exact chart, two people with the same Sun sign can have very different experiences on the same day. That is why your birth date, time, and place matter so much, and why a personalized reading beats a generic horoscope.
